Salford City’s FA Cup adventure came to a cruel end last night, beaten 2-0 by League Two Hartlepool United after extra time in a tie which they largely dominated.

The Evo-Stik League Northern Premier side were the more enterprising for long periods, struck the post through Richie Allen and were thwarted by several good saves from Trevor Carson.

In the seventh minute of extra time the deadlock was finally broken by one of the home side’s few serious efforts on target, the unmarked Scott Fenwick powering a header home from Rhys Oates’ precise cross. It was heartbreak for Darren Sheridan’s side and the club owned by Manchester United’s “Class of ’92”. Hartlepool will now entertain Derby County in the third round.

Salford made the stronger start at the Victoria Ground and nearly took the lead in the 10th minute as Carson spilled a low cross from the left but James Poole could not keep his close-range shot down.

The closest to a goal in the first half came from the visitors with 17-year-old Lewis Hardcastle, on loan from Blackburn, firing just wide of the far post from 20 yards out on the right.

Salford were again the more lively side at the start of the second half, Hardcastle ballooning a chance over the bar after being set up by Danny Webber, then being denied on the hour-mark when Carson kept out his spectacular curling effort which was heading for the bottom corner.

With 19 minutes left and heavy rain making conditions difficult, Jordan Hulme nearly bundled in Webber’s corner at the far post. Allen then hit the post just moments after coming on with a fierce free-kick from the edge of the area that was deflected by the Hartlepool wall.

All the near-misses came back to haunt Salford when Fenwick decided the tie seven minutes into extra time. Then Mikael Mandron made sure of victory by scored Hartlepool’s second from close range in the 120th minute.

League One Scunthorpe earned themselves a trip to Chelsea by beating Leyton Orient 3-0 at Glanford Park thanks to a 55th-minute own goal by Jean Yves Mvoto, quickly followed by Jack King’s strike. Hakeeb Adelakun got the third in added time.

Non-league Grimsby went out at the hands of Shrewsbury, Abu Ogogo clinching a 1-0 win with a goal right at the death. Shrewsbury now go to Cardiff.
