Manuel Pellegrini gaffe: 'I love pressure - to manage a big team like Manchester United' - says the Manchester City manager after Capital One Cup victory

Pellegrini was speaking after his Manchester City side - not United - won the League Cup at Wembley

Manuel Pellegrini may have let his League Cup success go to his head as the Manchester City manager momentarily forgot who he is in charge of, having claimed he loves the pressure of managing a “big team like Manchester United”.

The 60-year-old made the rather large error in an interview shortly after the final whistle, with the Chilean still soaking up the celebrations on the Wembley Stadium pitch.

Having seen his side overturn a one-goal deficit thanks to two wonder-strikes from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri – plus a third late on from winger Jesus Navas – Pellegrini made the slip-up when he was asked how he deals with the pressure of such an occasion.

“I love pressure - to manage a big team like Manchester United and to [be competing in] all the competitions is very good for all of us,” said Pellegrini.

“We’re the only club that still has the chance to continue trying to win all the competitions and this will give us a lot of confidence.”

Even though United manager David Moyes is under pressure, the likelihood that Pellegrini will be lured to the red half of Manchester is unthinkable. And given the success on Sunday handing City their third trophy in three years, we don’t think fans will be calling for Pellegrini’s head over this one.
