Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka’s position at the Riverside remains perilous as a reported breakdown in relations with his players threatens to derail their season.

The Spaniard, a former assistant to José Mourinho at Real Madrid, is said to have stormed out of a team meeting at the club’s Rockliffe Park training complex on Friday morning.

Despite being second in the table ahead of the crucial run-in for promotion to the Premier League, the Daily Mail report Karanka fumed at his side following the 1-0 defeat to relegation strugglers Rotherham United.

The 42-year-old was not in the dugout for their Championship match against Charlton on Sunday.

Seven points adrift of leaders Burnley, Boro remain among the favourites to secure a spot in the automatic promotion places.

In a statement on their official website, the club said: "Aitor Karanka did not take training on Saturday morning.

"Assistant Head Coach Steve Agnew will take charge of the team for Sunday’s fixture at Charlton Athletic.

"We appreciate supporters will want to know further details, but at this time the club cannot make any further comment and is solely focused on Sunday's game at The Valley."
