Brentford expect Uwe Rosler to remain in charge this weekend, despite interest from Wigan

Brentford expect manager Uwe Rosler to be in charge of the team for tomorrow’s FA Cup tie at Carlisle even though Wigan chairman Dave Whelan said the German is ‘‘mad keen’’ to be their new manager.

Wigan have been granted permission to speak to Rosler about replacing Owen Coyle as manager and have agreed to pay compensation for him. But Brentford sporting director Mark Warburton told Standard Sport that the club have not given up hope that Rosler will stay at Griffin Park. “He is being very professional and preparing the team,” said Warburton, who revealed that Rosler had not yet held formal talks with Wigan. “Everyone is just assuming that he will go because Wigan are a Championship club and obviously it is an attractive proposition but we have a big project here and the owner has invested a lot. It will be a big decision but that is what life is about.”

Rosler has been at Brentford for two-and-a-half years but his family are based in the north-west. He was today named League One manager of the month after masterminding an impressive run which has seen Brentford win eight out of their last nine games. They are currently fourth, six points of second-placed Wolves.

Whelan clearly believes Rosler will join Wigan and says a deal could be done tomorrow. “He’s obviously former City and lives in the area,’’ he said. ‘‘He’s the type I’m looking for and I’m determined to get an agreement.

“I’m told he’s mad keen to come and, I have to say, Brentford have been very good in their dealings. They are obviously reluctant to lose him but they’ve been very helpful.

“The aim would be for him to get us in the play-offs this year and get back up to the Premier League inside two seasons. I will tell him all of this when I speak to him but I hope we can get it done tomorrow.”

Among the early contenders to replace Rosler at Griffin Park is highly thought of Walsall boss Dean Smith.

If Rosler goes it will come as a bitter blow so soon after the club’s long-term future was assured.

On Thursday night, Hounslow Council approved their application for a new 20,000 stadium at Lionel Road. “It is fantastic for the future of the club,” said Warburton.

The decision is the culmination of an 11-year battle to move from Griffin Park, the club’s home since 1904. Brentford hope to be able to move in for the start of the 2016-17 season, although the plan is now subject to approval from the mayor of London and the Government.

FORMER Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock today ruled himself out of the running for the vacancy at Sheffield Wednesday. Dave Whelan added: “I’ve had a good look around and I’ve had very good reports on him.
