Harry Redknapp in talks with Derby County about joining in 'advisory role'

Harry Redknapp is in negotiations with Derby County about the prospect of joining the East Midlands club in an advisory role to assist head coach Darren Wassall.

The Rams sacked former Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid coach Paul Clement as manager in February for failing to adhere to the “Derby way” and have since entrusted former academy chief Wassall with guiding them to promotion.

Derby are six points adrift of an automatic promotion place after a collapse in form across late winter but Redknapp has been approached about providing his experience to help see them over the line.

The 69-year-old has previously managed West Ham United, Portsmouth, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers but resigned at Loftus Road a year ago because of health problems.

Chief executive Sam Rush told BBC Radio Derby: “Darren felt he needed some more senior coaching support, someone who has been there and done it. Harry came to the training ground and met Darren and myself. We had a discussion and are looking at bringing him in in an advisory role.

“It was Darren's idea. It is a short-term coaching role to provide support for the rest of the season. It is a defined time for the next eight weeks or so.”

Derby’s most recent result did little to appease supporters who want a more established manager in charge at the iPro Stadium as the Rams squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 at relegation threatened Rotherham United.
