An outstanding display from Tyrone Mings, left, inspired Ipswich as two late goals beat Brighton (Rex)

Two attacking full-backs were said to be the reason why Ipswich looked an improved side in beating Millwall at the weekend – and they could hardly have underlined the point better than in last night’s victory over Brighton.

Jonathan Parr, the right-back, scored the goal that eventually separated two closely matched sides before Daryl Murphy added a superb late second. But it was left-back Tyrone Mings who stole the show with a performance of all-round excellence that showed why Mick McCarthy was prepared to sell the popular Aaron Cresswell to West Ham in the summer.

Brighton made an eye-catching start, with the mobile Craig Mackail-Smith prominent. The visitors went close early in the second half when Lewis Dunk and Kazenga Lualua brought unorthodox saves from Dean Gerken.

On the hour Mings showed why Crystal Palace coveted him with a brazen piece of invention; with his back to goal he met David McGoldrick’s low cross with a flick that David Stockdale did extremely well to fingertip up and over.

And almost inevitably it was Mings again who opened up Brighton for Town to take the lead. His cut-back was met by Jay Tabb, whose shot was parried by Stockdale to the feet of Parr, who fired home.

Murphy wrapped it up with a brilliant finish two minutes from time, pursuing a long high ball to the corner of the area from where he dispatched it into the corner of the net with a finely judged volley.
