Jewell hopes to beat loan deadline for Pompey deal

Ipswich manager moves to sign unnamed player from financially troubled Championship rivals

The Ipswich Town manager, Paul Jewell, has discussed a possible deal with an unnamed Portsmouth player but is unsure whether the move will go through. Pompey's financial problems have already led to the departures of several players on loan recently, with players such as Liam Lawrence, Erik Huseklepp, Stephen Henderson and Hayden Mullins moving on from Fratton Park.

Further departures could happen before today's 5pm loan deadline, with Ipswich having previously shown an interest in Joel Ward and Jason Pearce. And Jewell is now waiting to see if the mystery player agrees to a switch.

"I met one of them on Sunday after getting permission off Portsmouth," Jewell told the East Anglian Daily Times. "Whether that's going to happen I don't know. I'm not going to tell you who it is but we chatted for a couple of hours. If it happens, great, if it doesn't then we move on."

The Doncaster Rovers chief executive, Dave Morris, has stepped down from his post to end an 11-year association with the Championship club. During Morris' time at the helm, Rovers returned to the Football League and have established themselves in the second tier after moving to the Keepmoat Stadium, although they are battling to stave off relegation this term. Meanwhile, Rovers full-back Tommy Spurr will miss the rest of the season with a broken hand.

Oldham Athletic are giving a trial to Liam Irwin, the teenage son of former Latics and Manchester United star Denis. The 19-year-old midfielder, capped by the Republic of Ireland at Under-19 level, is currently at Bolton but played the second half of Oldham's reserve team game against Wrexham yesterday.

Brentford have extended the loan deals of Everton duo Jake Bidwell and Adam Forshaw until the end of the season. Everton midfielder James Wallace has also prolonged his stay with Tranmere Rovers until May.

The Bournemouth defender Charlie Daniels is set to be out of action for the next three weeks after suffering a hairline fracture to a bone in his foot, while Hartlepool striker Colin Nish will not play again this season after being told he requires surgery on his injured knee.

Notts County have signed striker Tyrell Waite from Ilkeston following a successful trial at Meadow Lane.

Crewe defender Harry Davis has signed a two-year contract extension with the League Two club. The 20-year-old, son of Alex manager Steve, has established himself as a first team regular at Gresty Road this term, and his new deal runs until summer 2014.
