Retired NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal has thrown his weight behind Northampton Town’s bid to earn promotion from League Two.

The 7ft 1in former basketball player now co-owns a radio station in the United States of America with Kelvin Thomas, who recently completed his takeover of the Midlands outfit.

The Cobblers, managed by Chris Wilder, are currently five points clear atop of the fourth division table after the 4-0 win at Leyton Orient prolonged their winning run to seven matches.

In a 30-second video clip, the former LA Laker said: "I just wanted to wish Kelvin and all the Cobblers best of luck. First place is where I like to be and it's great to see you guys at the top.

"Looking forward to coming to Sixfields at some point to see a match.

"Keep grinding guys, I know you're going to be the champs."

A spokesman for Northampton Town Football Club said: "We are delighted to have the support of Shaq, and his support has created a lot of excitement.

"We have invited him to come to a Northampton Town game when he is next in England and we can't wait to see him at Sixfields wearing a claret shirt, cheering the Cobblers on."
