Nervous Wednesday hang on to make most of Owusu's quick start

Lloyd Owusu scored twice in the first 20 minutes as Sheffield Wednesday survived a Swindon comeback to win 3-2 in a Second Division match delayed by crowd congestion at the County Ground.

The former Brentford striker opened the scoring on five minutes and doubled Wednesday's advantage 15 minutes later. Wednesday were firmly in control when Shefki Kuqi added a third on 25 minutes, but Stefani Miglioranzi pulled a goal back for the home side six minutes later.

Swindon increased the pressure when Sammy Igoe reduced the deficit further with a goal 12 minutes into the second half, but the Yorkshire side, relegated from the First Division last season, held on for the three points.

Queens Park Rangers thrashed Blackpool 5-0, with Gareth Ainsworth scoring twice at Loftus Road. Ainsworth put QPR ahead on four minutes, and the home side went into the break 2-0 in front thanks to Richard Langley's goal on 43 minutes.

Kevin Gallen added a third 10 minutes into the second half, Ainsworth scored his second on 69 minutes, and Steve Palmer completed the rout in stoppage time.

Bristol City were also 5-0 winners, at home to Notts County. Lee Peacock, Lee Matthews, who each scored twice, and Lee Miller got the goals for the home side.

Hartlepool won 4-3 at Peterborough despite falling 3-1 behind when Andy Clarke scored his second of the day for the home side six minutes into the second half. Paul Robinson pulled a goal back four minutes later and Matty Robson equalised for Hartlepool in the 70th minute, before Michael Nelson scored the winner five minutes before the end.

Brentford never recovered from the 12th-minute sending-off of Peter Beadle as they crashed 4-1 at Tranmere. Goals from Gary Jones and Shane Nicholson, who converted a 39th-minute penalty, gave Tranmere a half-time lead, and though Brentford pulled one back with Stephen Hunt's penalty, further goals from Simon Haworth and Nicholson made sure of the points.

Luton Town beat newly-promoted Rushden & Diamonds 3-1 thanks to two goals from Tony Thorpe. Leon Knight also scored twice as Brighton won 3-1 at Oldham, and a Dean Gorre penalty ensured Barnsley won 1-0 at home to Colchester.

In the Third Division, the York City player-manager, Chris Brass, was sent off on 34 minutes for clashing with Carlisle United's Steve Livingstone, but was on the pitch long enough to guide his side to the 2-1 lead, courtesy of Lee Nogan's 13th-minute strike, which gave them the win.

Bradley Maylett scored a hat-trick as Swansea beat Bury 4-2, and Doncaster got their return to the Football League off to a winning start by beating Leyton Orient with two second-half goals from Leo Fortune-West.
