Peter Schmeichel has refused to dismiss speculation linking him with the vacant Sheffield United manager’s position, saying that while he has not applied for the job, it is “great to be associated with such a great football club”.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper, who has his coaching badges but no managerial experience, could succeed David Weir, who was sacked on Friday after just four months in charge of the League One side.

“I can see that I've been linked with the vacant manager’s job at Sheffield United,” the 49-year-old tweeted today. “This is not my doing, I have not applied for any jobs, but it's great to be associated with such a great football club.”
