Round-up: Maynard seals Crewe's triumph over Wigan
Crewe Alexandra took the first big scalp of the Carling Cup second round last night, the League One side dumping last season's finalists Wigan out of the competition 2-0 at Gresty Road.
Nicky Maynard added a last-minute winner to Rodney Jack's first-half goal to go through, their task easier after Premiership Wigan made five changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Everton at the weekend, with injuries preventing the manager, Paul Jewell, from shuffling his pack further.
Just before the break, Fitz Hall crossed for Jack to slam past the goalkeeper Mike Pollitt. In added time Maynard tucked away a low cross for his eighth goal of the season to complete what Alex manager Dario Gradi called "a memorable night".
The Premiership's Charlton and Sheffield United overcame Carlisle and Bury 1-0 respectively while Reading and Watford were taken to extra time by League Two's Darlington and Accrington Stanley.
Watford, who fielded a reserve team, defeated Stanley 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes while Reading, also at home, won 4-2 on penalties after equalising in only the 86th minute in a 3-3 thriller.
