Salford City defeated Notts County, 59 places above them in the football pyramid, to book their place in the second round of the FA Cup on a historic night at Moor Lane.

The Northern League Premier Division part-time side, co-owned by five former Manchester United stars, were making their first ever appearance in the first round of the competition.

That was unbelievable. It puts faith back into you; it's what football is about

With the BBC Sport cameras watching, attracting an audience of 3.5m viewers, the hosts took the lead in the 46th minute when Danny Webber applied a finish to James Poole’s cross just seconds into the second half.

The packed Moor Lane crowd were sent delirious 27 minutes later as record £5,000 signing Jordan Hulme combined with Richie Allen in the County box, allowing the latter to complete a stunning move with Salford’s second.

Gary Neville, one of the five co-owners, said at full-time: “That was unbelievable. It puts faith back into you; it's what football is about. The FA Cup takes a battering but tonight epitomises what it is all about. I've not had a moment like that for a few years.”

Joint-manager Anthony Johnson, whose story has been told on BBC documentary series Class of ’92: Out of Their League, was overjoyed to make history at the club.

“It's once-in-a-lifetime stuff, that's what we told them. I didn't think we could win! They are a full-time side with top players but the boys have proved me wrong. I've never felt so emotional after a game.”
