Wolves come from behind to beat Swansea in five-goal thriller

Wolves twice came from behind to beat Swansea 3-2 at Vetch Field and book their place in the second round of the Worthington Cup.

James Thomas's stunning free-kick after eight minutes gave the Third Division side a shock lead, but Nathan Blake headed Wolves level.

The Swans were back in front on 22 minutes when Thomas turned provider for Jamie Wood, but once again Dave Jones' men hit back through Ludovic Pollet's bicycle kick nine minutes before half-time.

Wolves stepped up a gear after the break and Alex Rae won it with a fine strike 12 minutes from time.

"We knew what to expect," said the Wolves manager, Dave Jones. "We weren't as tight as we should have been and gave them far too much time."

Macclesfield heaped more pressure on under-fire Barnsley manager Steve Parkin. The Tykes have picked up just two wins from their opening seven games in the Second Division and were undone again at Moss Rose, falling to a 4-1 defeat after extra-time.

Kyle Lightbourne's fierce volley put the home side ahead on the half-hour and it took Isaiah Rankin's late effort to force the extra 30 minutes. But it was the Third Division side who triumphed, their striker Danny Whitaker smashing a hat-trick to take them through.

The cup debutants Boston United had no answer to Cardiff City's firepower as they slumped to a 5-1 defeat. Robert Earnshaw's hat-trick put the Welshmen in complete control, with an own goal making it 4-0 just before the break. Paul Ellender grabbed a consolation for the Pilgrims, but Peter Thorne completed the rout.

Brighton needed extra-time to edge past Exeter City at Withdean. With the score level at 1-1 after 90 minutes it took a Danny Cullip header seven minutes from time to send the Seagulls through.

Coventry City enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over Colchester United at Highfield Road. The Sky Blues were ahead after just 12 seconds when Gary McSheffrey swept home Dean Gordon's deep pass at close range. Goals from the player-manager Gary McAllister and Lee Mills completed the win.

Preston North End survived a scare against the Third Division side Scunthorpe before coming through after extra time at Deepdale. Steve Torpey put Scunthorpe ahead, only for Graham Alexander to level from the spot. The match was heading for penalties when the Jamaican Ricardo Fuller grabbed the winner with two minutes to go.

There were no goals during normal time between Swindon Town and Wycombe Wanderers at the County Ground, but the game sprung to life in extra time.

Richard Harris nodded the visitors ahead, but Adam Willis levelled. However, Wycombe were not to be denied and Paul McCarthy scored the winner 11 minutes from the end.
