Arturo Vidal: Chile confirm Juventus midfielder will not be dropped from Copa America squad despite losing licence after drink-driving charge

Arturo Vidal has been released from police custody following his car crash on Tuesday night while allegedly "under the influence of alcohol", but the midfielder will not be dropped from Chile's Copa America squad.

The confirmation that Vidal will remain part of the national team’s plans comes after a video emerged of him being a arrested following the accident in the Chilean city of Santiago.

In the footage, Vidal can be seen to say to a policeman: “Handcuff me, but you'll be s****ing on whole of Chile.” He then added: “You f***** up, sir”.

Vidal appeared in court yesterday and was charged with drink-driving and had his driving licence revoked, but Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli confirmed that he will remain in his plans for the next few weeks, and also claimed that some of the reaction had been overblown.

"I don't think it's as major as some have said," said Sampaoli."We have not decided to suspend him."

Vidal was seen in tears when he was released and admitted: "I let everyone down.”

The accident happened on the outskirts of the Chilean city of Santiago late on Tuesday night, when Vidal's Ferrari 458 crashed into another vehicle on the motorway before veering off-road.

Vidal and his wife Maria Teresa Matus, who was alongside him in the car as the couple made their way back home from a casino according to local reports, were taken to hospital and the footballer was later seen leaving with police for questioning after reportedly suffering minor injuries.

Chilean national police chief Colonel Ricardo Gonzalez said: "The driver of the red vehicle was under the influence of alcohol."

Vidal was taken to the San Luis de Buin hospital, where it was confirmed he was treated for minor injuries before television images showed him leaving in the back seat of a police car.
