It was another sorry night for Brazil who were unable to haul themselves up from their 7-1 semi-final thrashing as they lost 3-0 to the Netherlands in the third-place play-off.
The night started well with the crowd inside Estádio Nacional de Brasilia showing a willingness to get behind their team despite their humiliation at the hands of Germany.
But that was as good as it got when after just two minutes restored captain Thiago Silva tugged Arjen Robben back as he rushed in on goal.
A penalty was given and Robin van Persie took his tally to four for the tournament.
On 17 minutes Daley Blind produced a fine finish and for a moment it looked like a repeat of their worst ever defeat could be on the cards.
Thankfully for Luiz Felipe Scolari Brazil pulled themselves together. Though midway through the second half Oscar, admittedly harshly, became the first player to be booked for simulation.
In injury time Georginio Wijnaldum was able to make the scoreline another embarrassing one for the hosts and with it secured the Netherlands the bronze medal at the 2014 World Cup.
