A backlash had been expected.

England's new Nike home shirt has been universally slated by users on Twitter, watching the Three Lions wear it for the first time against the Netherlands in a friendly at Wembley this evening.

The kit has been widely criticised, with the away version drawing the ire of former Three Lions striker Gary Lineker who tweeted during England's win over Germany: "Can’t think of a worse England strip".

Nike’s creative director Martin Lotti recently defended the strip in which this summer England will look to win a first major trophy since 1966.

"England have had great moments in red over the years – one in particular – and our design team have risen to the challenge of integrating references to England’s footballing history with a futuristic system of performance apparel in both the home and away kits," said Lotti.
