England OUT of the 2014 World Cup... but here are five reasons for England fans to be cheerful

A Luis Suarez double, another England defeat, a Costa Rica win and the Three Lions are out of the 2014 World Cup quicker than we could have anticipated. It’s certainly not the way that any England supporter wanted the Brazil 2014 campaign to go, but is it all doom and gloom? Here are a few reasons to cheer up and take a positive spin out of a disappointing tournament.

When has defeat been accepted with such optimism?

Mario Balotelli may have consigned Roy Hodgson’s side to an early defeat, but when has the response from the English public been one of “by God didn’t we play well”? The optimism that arose from the 2-1 defeat to Italy led many to believe England had enough in the tank to overcome Uruguay on the route to comfortable second round qualification. Thursday’s defeat showed England are far from the finished article, but they’re certainly on the right track, and providing they see off the already-qualified Costa Rica then they can take something out of a first round exit.

Wayne Rooney actually scored in a World Cup

Three World Cups, 10 matches, 0 goals. Not any more. Like Arsenal’s infamous trophy drought, Rooney’s World Cup agony in front of goal has come to an end following his tap-in against Uruguay. It’s possible that just like buses, one will instantly lead to two, three or even four when England take on Costa Rica.

We lasted longer than Spain

The double-European Championship winners and World Cup holders Spain have already booked their flight home after defeats to the Netherlands and Chile means their defence will end on Monday evening. At least England lasted a day more in Brazil than the world champions.

We should have a better chance of winning the Euros

So it’s not the World Cup, but there is not one England supporter who would turn their nose at success in the European Championship in two years’ time. Players such as Adam Lallana, Ross Barkley, Jack Wilshere and Luke Shaw will arrive with much more experience under their belt, which can only be a good thing, and with the likes of Brazil, Argentina and, ahem, Uruguay absent, England stand a much better chance of securing their first major trophy in half a century.
