Roy Hodgson has named his England squad for this summer’s European Championships in France and, as ever, there is a mixture of delight and disappointment for the players in contention.

Marcus Rashford, Jack Wilshere and Andros Townsend were perhaps the most surprising selections, though all were predicted to be included in the provisional 26-man squad by The Independent’s chief football correspondent Mark Ogden at the weekend.

Theo Walcott, meanwhile, is the biggest name to be omitted. The Arsenal forward has struggled to stake his claim for selection in recent months and, with a wealth of attacking options at his disposal, Hodgson has decided to take others to France.

There’s also a host of players who played parts in the qualifying campaign who will find themselves sitting on the sofa this summer. Michael Carrick and Phil Jagielka can count themselves unlucky to have missed out, with younger players preferred in their positions.

Take a look at the gallery above to see the best England players who will be staying at home.
