Wright described England's defeat as 'literally unexplainable' (ITV)

England’s humiliating 2-1 defeat to Iceland reminded Ian Wright of Space Jam, the 1996 film starring Michael Jordan.

Wright, who analysed the game as a pundit for ITV, compared the performances of Wayne Rooney and others to those of the basketball players whose talent is stolen by aliens in the film.

“I just can’t stop thinking about the film Space Jam,” he said. “It’s like the Monstars nicked their talent or something.

“It’s literally unexplainable what happened to the lads in the second half. It’s just devastating for me, I can’t believe it.”

In the film, former NBA players Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Shawn Bradley, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues have their abilities ‘stolen’ by gang of aliens called the ‘Monstars’.

England seemed equally as inept in Nice on Monday night, producing one of the worst displays in the history of the national team.

Iceland, a team who were ranked 133^rd in the world four years ago, took the lead in the 18^th minute and rarely looked like relinquishing it.

Lars Lagerback's side will now play France in the European Championships quarter-finals on Sunday at the Stade de France.

Roy Hodgson resigned as England manager in his post-match press conference. Gareth Southgate, the England Under-21 manager, is the favourite to succeed him.
