England conceded a sickening injury-time equaliser to leave an air of disappointment looming over their 1-1 Euro 2016 Group B draw with Russia, with further clashes between the rival fans breaking out in the stands of the Stade Velodrome at the full-time whistle.

As England fans attempted to flee for safety, Roy Hodgson’s side were left dejected having snatched a draw from the jaws of victory. A Vasili Berezutski header was bundled over the line to beat Joe Hart and a recovering Chris Smalling, but the ball already appeared to have crossed the whitewash by the time Aleksandr Kokorin made contact with the ball.

England thought they had done enough to win the match when Eric Dier rifled home a free-kick from the edge of the box, but for the ninth time in succession the Three Lions failed to win their opening match at a European Championship.

England dominated the match but were unable to take their numerous chances, and they now face a crunch game against rivals Wales on Thursday, knowing that Chris Coleman’s side will be buoyed by Saturday afternoon’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia.
