England’s man of the moment Andros Townsend has reportedly agreed to a vastly improved new contract with Tottenham Hotspur worth £2m per year. The 22-year-old currently earns £6,000 a week at the north London club.

The winger is expected to start for England against Poland at Wembley on Tuesday night, after capping his impressive international debut with a goal in the 4-1 victory over Montenegro last Friday.

Townsed, who signed up at the Tottenham Academy aged nine and is a lifelong fan of the club, has been on nine different loan spells in his time at Spurs but it was his last temporary move, to Queens Park Rangers last season, which was his breakthrough in Premier League football.

After his man of the match display on Friday, Townsend told tottenhamhotspur.com that he won’t be getting carried away by his dream debut: “It hasn't sunk in at the moment and I haven't allowed it to because we've got another big game on Tuesday.

"That's the best thing, to keep my feet on the ground and try not to get carried away."
