Cristiano Ronaldo had a night to remember as Portugal emerged triumphant in yesterday evening's Euro 2016 final.

It was a certainly an emotional occasion for the 31-year-old who was initially left heartbroken and in tears after being forced off in the 25th minute due to injury.

Almost 90 minutes later and Ronaldo’s agony had turned to ecstasy though as the whistle blew to confirm Portugal’s surprise victory against France, courtesy of a late goal from super-sub Eder.

After securing the Henri Delaunay Trophy, Ronaldo could barely hold back his emotion which appeared to get the better of him in the wake of the match.

As Britain’s very own Mark Clattenburg left the pitch to a guard of honour from the Portugal team, captain Ronaldo seized the opportunity to thank the referee from the very bottom of his heart.

Stepping forward to meet Clattenburg, Ronaldo grabbed the Briton's head with both hands and shook it with delight.

It’s safe to say the 41-year-old wasn’t expecting such a warm display of affection from the footballer.

Despite jumping out of his skin, Clattenburg managed to keep his composure and casually plodded on towards the changing rooms.

And who said players had no respect for the ref?

For a player who has carried his sides at times throughout the tournament, Ronaldo will feel that victory at the Stade de France was thoroughly deserved.

Having done what Messi never could, he has undoubtedly cemented his status as one of the game’s greats.
