Euro 2016: England and Wales fans hope to celebrate victory as pubs extend opening hours for Queen's birthday

Should both England and Wales emerge victorious from their opening European Championship fixtures this week, supporters will have two hours longer to celebrate with pubs set to have extended opening hours to mark the Queen’s 90^th birthday.

Pub licensing hours across both England and Wales have been extended by two hours meaning those licensed to trade until 11pm will now be allowed to stay open until 1am on Saturday 11 June and Sunday 12 June, the Prime Minister announced in March.

England face Russia in Marseille on Saturday in the first match of their Group B campaign while Wales are scheduled to meet Slovakia in Bordeaux earlier in the day, but millions will be watching in bars and living rooms ahead of the big kick-off.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrates two birthdays each year with her actual birthday falling on 21 April and her official, ceremonial birthday is reserved for a selected Saturday in June.

The British Beer and Pub Association has said similar arrangements surrounding the royal wedding between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations the following year resulted in a £20m boost to the pub sector.

Announcing the extension during Prime Minister's Questions back in March, David Cameron said: “I'm sure that will be welcomed right across the House.”
