Mario Götze could not have made a bigger mess of being named in Germany’s squad for the Euro 2016 Championship after he congratulated Marco Reus on his call-up, only to realise that he had been ruled out of the tournament with injury.

To make matters worse, Götze deleted the tweet and posted a new one – but tagged the wrong person on Twitter, and to top it all off the episode unfolded on the Borussia Dortmund forward’s 27th birthday.

Götze was named in Joachim Löw’s 23-man squad for the summer tournament in France, and he preceded the head coach’s announcement with a happy birthday message to his former club team-mate Reus that congratulated him on his inclusion too.

The tweet read: “Happy birthday Marco! Can’t wait for our next tournament together #vivelafreundshaft”

However, it immediately transpired that Reus had not made the cut, with Löw revealing that he has left out the Dortmund pace merchant due to his ongoing injury troubles

"With Marco Reus, the situation is the doctors cannot give me any definite forecast," Löw said at a press conference on Tuesday.

"Marco has serious health problems. At the moment, he can only run in a straight line.

"The doctors are sceptical that he will be fully fit in the coming weeks and with these demanding games.

"Therefore, it's a bitter decision for us and for him, and disappointing for everybody - he would have been a huge enrichment for us."

Götze quickly deleted his tweet and posted a new one to claim that Reus’s omission was “unbelievable”, but he made yet another mistake as he tagged in @marcinho11 – who evidently is not Reus.

Despite the error, Götze has not deleted his tweet to tag Reus’s actual account, but it’s clear that the Bayern Munich midfielder is saddened by his friend’s absence from the squad.

Germany will be looking to emulate the West Germany side of the seventies who won Euro 1972 before going on to lift the World Cup two years later, with Löw’s side able to add the European Championship crown to their World Cup success of 2014.
