Goalkeeper Jack Butland is set to undergo scans on his ankle following his tearful exit during England's friendly triumph over Germany in Berlin on Saturday evening.

The Stoke stopper, who continues to emerge from the shadow of Gordon Banks in the Potteries, was hurt in the passage of play which led to Toni Kroos's opener for the hosts.

Butland, earning just his fourth cap, was in tears as he was stretched off but the guests recovered from Mario Gómez's 57th minute header to emerge victorious, courtesy of late strikes by Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Eric Dier.

“You can never say how bad these are because they need to be assessed,” said England manager Roy Hodgson at full-time. “We hope it is not serious but we have to wait.”

Butland has been ever-present for Stoke this season as Mark Hughes’s side bid to secure European qualification in the Midlands.

Hodgson, meanwhile, has called upon his England players to remain grounded after potentially his greatest night since replacing Fabio Capello in 2012.

The former Fulham and West Bromwich Albion manager said: “Let's keep these players' feet on the ground, keep them humble. Let's keep them hungry to learn from their mistakes.

“It certainly won't do it any harm, but it's a friendly match. We must be careful attaching too much importance on it. Had we lost the game 3-2, and the Germans had scored late on, I wouldn't have been sitting here bitterly disappointed.”
