Poland took an early lead in their first ever European Championship quarter-final but were pegged back by a Portugal side with more history in the competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the shoot-out and helped his country through to next Wednesday's opening semi-final, where they will face either Belgium or Wales.

But which players took top billing? Check out our ratings and leave your comments in the section below.

Defended well against intermittent threat of Ronaldo and got forward well

Kamil Glik 8 out of 10

Great hope returned form suspension to add late impetus from the bench

PORTUGAL

Not entirely convincing with handling but made all-important save in shoot-out

Did some things well, others not so much. Remains a divider of opinion among supporters

Best player on the pitch, used physicality well and dominated against Polish attack

José Fonte 7 out of 10

Benefitted from commanding showing of Pepe and played part in keeping Poland out after opener

Eliseu 6 out of 10

Struggled to make impact after being brought back into the side

William Carvalho 7 out of 10

Caught the eye with his positional sense and time on the ball. Banned for semi-final, however.
