The 79-year-old president said he did not 'have a mandate from the entire world of football'

After 17 years in charge and over forty years working within football's global governing body, Sepp Blatter finally announced he was stepping down - amid cries of jubilation from many long-standing critics.

With the US department of justice indicting 18 people including 13 Fifa executives in an ongoing investigation, Blatter resigned his position, although he will remain president of the organisation until a successor is chosen at an extraordinary meeting of Fifa's congress.

His decision followed reports that Blatter could be facing a corruption investigation by the FBI, despite repeated claims from the Swiss boss that he had no knowledge of corruption within Fifa.

In a surprise Fifa press conference on June 2, Blatter emerged from the bowels of Fifa's HQ in Zurich to announce that he was resigning just four days after he was elected to a fifth term.

In his speech, Blatter said he did not "have a mandate from the entire world of football — the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football."
