Slovenia vs England player ratings: Who stood out on a flat night for the Three Lions in Ljubljana?

Slovenia 0 England 0: The Independent's player ratings as Three Lions escape with a point

England put in yet another typical England performance against Slovenia – frustratingly sloppy.

Slovenia were the better team in truth, hitting both the post and crossbar, the latter thanks to a magnificent stop from Joe Hart.

The experiment of starting Wayne Rooney from the bench didn’t appear to have too much of a difference on England’s play, with his replacement Eric Dier nearly guilty of handing Slovenia a first-half goal.

Stand-in skipper Jordan Henderson couldn’t replicate his sterling performance against Malta on the weekend and joined his central midfield partner in nearly handing the hosts a goal with a terrible backpass.

Given the way the game went, England could easily have lost their first qualifying game in 31, their last exactly seven years and one day before this draw.

Gareth Southgate will be happy with the hard-earned point as he keeps England top of Group F by two points, even though the point ended England’s 14-game winning streak in qualifiers.
