An XFM radio presenter has summed up the general feeling surrounding Welsh football after turning down a BBC interview because he was getting "s***faced" in celebrating the victory over Cyprus.

BBC Radio 4 producer Tim Walklate contacted XFM’s very own Welshman Elis James to see if he would be available for an interview to discuss the unprecedented rise in the Fifa rankings that saw the Welsh leapfrog their English counterparts into ninth place.

And why not? It doesn’t take much for Anglo-Welsh rivalries to be renewed when it comes to sport, but with Wales in action on Thursday night in a crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Cyrpus, Walklate may have been clutching at straws.

That proved to be the case when James’s reply arrived.

He tweeted: “@Walklate88 I will be s***faced unfortunately.”

James, who unsurprisingly also works as a stand-up comedian, also tweeted a picture of a fellow Welsh fan in his loving embrace, presumably in the seconds after Gareth Bale scored the winning header to give Chris Coleman’s side a 1-0 victory and remain top of Group B ahead of the likes of Belgium and Israel.

With a victory over their Israeli counterparts this Sunday enough to seal their path to a first ever European Championships, there could yet be more to celebrate across the Severn. Just don’t expect James to be in a fit state to give any interviews until well into next week.
