Man United v Chelsea: Premier League match preview

Marcus Rashford struck twice as Manchester United opened their Premier League account with a resounding 4-0 win over Frank Lampard's Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It was an awful start for the new Chelsea manager in his first league game on the bench for his old club as they struck the woodwork twice in the first half but paid for their defensive frailties.

Tammy Abraham crashed an early drive against the United bar but the hosts got in front with an 18th minute Rashford penalty after the England forward was pulled down by Kurt Zouma.

Chelsea, who had been the more creative in the opening half, went close to an equaliser when Emerson struck the post shortly before the break.

But the game turned decisively in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side's favour when, after a Rashford led counter-attack, Anthony Martial bundled in a low cross from Andreas Pereira in the 65th.

Two minutes later, Chelsea's defence was again exposed when Rashford timed his run to perfection to latch on to a long ball from Paul Pogba and beat goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a confident finish.

Substitute Daniel James, a close-season signing from Swansea City, then marked his United debut with the fourth, firing into the bottom corner via a deflection after being set-up by Pogba. Relive all the action:

Both Manchester United and Chelsea are in a period of transition. There are few that expect either to finish anywhere near Manchester City and Liverpool this season, and plenty doubt whether they will even be good enough for a place in the top four.

The positive, then, for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Frank Lampard, is that expectations are unusually low. Fans do not expect a title challenge; fourth place, and a sign of some progress, would suffice.

Both of these young managers appear to be prioritising the development of youth, which is clear in today's team selections. It remains to be seen, though, which side is the more cohesive, organised outfit following a busy pre-season. This is a difficult one to call, but the pressure, as the home team, will be on United.

There's no place in Chelsea's starting XI for Christian Pulisic, despite his impressive form in pre-season. Instead, Lampard opts to start with Mason Mount, who spent last year on loan at Derby.

The big news for Manchester United is that Harry Maguire makes his debut. Dan James, signed from Swansea in the summer, is on the bench.

"I hope Mason continues his form with Derby last season and then in pre-season – I think he stepped up a level there and he deserves his opportunity. He’s got energy in abundance but he’s also got quality. This is a big test for him but I’ve got complete confidence, not just today but as a player in general.

"We’ve got a tough game. We want to make a good start and we’re confident going into the game."
