Marcos Rojo faces £140,000 fine for missing Manchester United's US pre-season tour
The Argentine duo both missed their scheduled flights to North America but for very different reasons
Marcos Rojo is expected to be fined two weeks' wages after the defender failed to join the Manchester United squad on their pre-season tour of North America.
The 25-year-old had been given an extended break after competing for Argentina in the Copa America and planned to fly out to meet his team mates last Saturday.
But after failing to renew his passport the Argentine was prevented from boarding his scheduled flight to North America.
Louis Van Gaal was far from impressed by Rojo’s mishaps and will fine him £140,000 for failing to join up with the rest of the squad as the club continues to prepare for the start of the Premier League season.
Angel di Maria also failed to make his scheduled flight out to North America with his move to Paris Saint-Germain all but confirmed.
Van Gaal said: “I have heard he [Di Maria] was not on the plane. I cannot say anything. Marcos Rojo was not on the plane, he had a passport issue but with Di Maria I don't know why.”
United have enjoyed a fine pre-season despite the pair’s absence. The club have maintained a 100 per cent record in America. Morgan Schneiderlin’s first goal for United gave the side a 1-0 win against Club America in Seattle while the club went on to beat San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 four days later.
Van Gaal’s side also recorded a 3-1 win against Barcelona at the Levi’s Stadium, California, and are scheduled to take on Di Maria’s new club this Thursday for their last pre-season game.
United will line up against PSG at Solider Field, Illinois.
