Chelsea vs Swansea City: Jose Mourinho confirms Diego Costa has a chance to play

Striker returned early from Spain duty after to have treatment on thigh injury

The Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that Diego Costa has a chance of playing against Swansea City tomorrow having come early injured from international duty.

Costa returned from duty with the Spain team on Monday, before the Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia to have treatment on a thigh injury. Today, Mourinho said that the striker, the Premier League player of the month in his first few weeks in England, had responded to treatment.

Mourinho said: “We had one week to work hard with the medical department and he has a chance to play tomorrow. We have a training session now to confirm his condition and make the final decision, but he was the only one who came back from the national team with a problem.”

The Chelsea manager said that the new five-year contract for current first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois changed nothing between him and Petr Cech. Mourinho said: “I don't think there is any problem. Petr is a very intelligent guy and knows, when Courtois was coming back, it was to sign a new contract and stay a long time. No one expected Courtois to come back here and not sign a new contract, and be a free agent in two years' time and Chelsea to be in trouble.

“What happened was something that was very much on the table and something everyone could expect. We have Courtois with a five-year contract which gives us that stability with such a young player. But Petr has three years and is a top goalkeeper. I'm more than happy to have both in my team.”
