English players 'do not get a chance'

Burnley chairman Barry Kilby told the football governance select committee yesterday that Premier League clubs' short-term recruitment strategy was damaging the England national team.

Kilby said that clubs' buying from abroad meant that young English players struggled for first-team football in the top flight, thereby limiting the talent pool for the national side.

"The problem is the Premier League hoovers up the very best young talent," Kilby said, "but once they get to 19 or 20 there are so many foreign players – and even imported foreign players – they have not got a chance. They need to develop as they do in Germany at that age in terms of real match experience and match mentality. Those vital years are being missed in the national team."
