Football round-up: Bayern Munich keep firing as Pep Guardiola saves big guns for Arsenal clash
Bayern Munich rested half their first team ahead of the Champions' League encounter with Arsenal but still thrashed Freiburg 4-0 at home yesterday to move 16 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
Pep Guardiola's bench included Jerome Boateng, David Alaba, Mario Götze and Bastian Schweinsteiger as his squad players were handed a chance to impress.
Xherdan Shaqiri, the Swiss winger, struck twice while a powerful header from Dante and a brilliantly taken effort from Claudio Pizarro completed a comfortable victory.
After the match, Bayern revealed that Shaqiri suffered a thigh injury which has ruled him out of the last-16 clash with the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
Treacy does it for Burnley
Burnley failed to take full advantage of being the only side in the Championship's top seven to play yesterday as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.
The game went ahead after a morning pitch inspection but Sean Dyche's side could only move within seven points of Leicester City, the leaders, leaving Queens Park Rangers four points adrift in third with two games in hand.
Tokelo Rantie put the hosts ahead at a wet Goldsands Stadium as Eddie Howe, the Bournemouth manager, faced his previous club, but substitute Keith Treacy levelled midway through the second half. Simon Francis came close to a winner for Bournemouth when he hit the crossbar late on.
Yorkshire thriller
Nick Proschwitz claimed a late equaliser for Barnsley as they picked up a point with a 2-2 draw away at their south Yorkshire rivals, Doncaster Rovers.
Proschwitz had opened the scoring from close range before James Coppinger scored either side of half-time to put Doncaster in control.
But Proschwitz struck again in the 89th minute for Danny Wilson's struggling side, who remain 23rd in the Championship table.
Deeney downs Boro
Troy Deeney's penalty was enough for Watford to secure a 1-0 home win against Middlesbrough after both sides were reduced to 10 men.
Fernando Forestieri was felled by Ben Gibson just after half-time and Deeney, Watford's top scorer, made no mistake from the spot.
Samba Diakité, the hosts' on-loan QPR midfielder, was shown a straight red card for a reckless two-footed challenge on Dean Whitehead two minutes after the goal.
But parity was swiftly restored when Gibson was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Watford's goalkeeper, Jonathan Bond, as he attempted a clearance.
Holloway: No one likes us
Martyn Woolford's late equaliser earned Millwall a 1-1 draw against Bolton at The Den to lift Ian Holloway's side four points clear of the Championship's relegation zone.
Lukas Jutkiewicz put Wanderers ahead but Millwall levelled in the second half after their goalkeeper, David Forde, had saved a penalty from Jutkiewicz. Woolford struck in the the 82nd minute following Simeon Jackson's shot.
"I felt I saw two penalties at least," said Holloway. "But we don't get anything here, do we? No one likes us and they don't care, well I do care. If it's handball for them it should be handball for us."
