Former England manager Terry Venables makes surprise return to management with Wembley FC

Former England coach Terry Venables has made a return to management - with Wembley FC.

The 69-year-old, who led England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, has been appointed as technical adviser to ninth-tier club.

Venables' last management position was with England as assistant to Steve McClaren, a role that came to an end when the pair were sacked after their failure to qualify the national side for Euro 2008.

"If they are willing to learn, I am willing to teach," said Venables as he was unveiled to the media.

"Managing, coaching and teaching football has been an essential part of my life for over 30 years."

Wembley FC, who play in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, were able to bring Venables on board after agreeing a sponsorship deal with Budweiser.

"This opportunity to share my knowledge of decades with an eager group of players and coaches was too important to turn down," continued Venables.

"Grassroots football is essential for the lifeblood of the professional game and if I can leave Wembley FC in a better position than I found it, then it will be a job well done."

As well as managing England, 'El Tel' also had stints in charge of Crystal Palace, QPR, Barcelona and Tottenham, whom he led to the 1991 FA Cup.
