Germanwings crash: World of football pays tribute to victims

Silence and black armbands during last night's friendly between Germany and Australia

The world of football has been paying tribute to the victims of the Germanwings plane crash that cost 150 lives.

The A320 Airbus, which crashed in the Alps, was flying from Spain to Germany and football teams in both those countries have shown their solidarity with those who died, including the 16 children from the same school returning from an exchange trip.

During last night's international friendly between World Cup holders Germany and Australia, the teams bowed their heads for a minute's silence prior to the match at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern. Both sides also wore black armbands.

German National team manager Oliver Bierhoff said: "We are deeply saddened and stunned. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims."

Earlier yesterday, Champions League holders Real Madrid and German champions Bayern Munich held a minute's silence at training.

Similar scenes as those seen at Germany's match last night are expected on Friday when Spain play Ukraine in a Euro 2016 qualifier.
