Jose Mourinho: Arsenal 'abandoned their philosophy' to beat Chelsea as the best team lost the Community Shield

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that Arsenal left "their philosophy in the dressing room" to beat his team in the Community Shield.

The Blues enjoyed 57 per cent of possession and had three more shots at goal than their London rivals but were unable to find an answer for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's first-half strike.

Ramires and Eden Hazard both had great chances to score with Arsenal content to sit back and play on the counter-attack.

"For me, depends on perspective," Mourinho said after the match. "Normally you like to say that the team that is defensive doesn’t deserve to win. The best team lost. The defensive team won.

"My opinion might be different to yours, a team that defends very well, that leaves their philosophy in the dressing room, plays all the second half with nine players in front of the box, this is football. Very good tactical organisation. They scored one goal, they deserved to win."

He added: "You don’t think Arsenal abandoned their philosophy? One team played counter-attack well, another had initiative and played well but without the sharpness that you need. They created, they tried, tactically everything. We didn’t equalise, we didn’t play at our normal level. If you want to be pragmatic like I normally am, I say they score, they didn’t concede, well done, congratulations."

Wenger and Mourinho failed to shake hands at the end of the game, with the Frenchman walking down the tunnel at the final whistle and then seemingly avoiding Mourinho despite the Chelsea manager shaking the hands of the Arsenal players.

The Portuguese played down the incident.

"I was doing what the status of my club and my status I think I have to do, which was to do be there for the winners, wait for them in the way that you only miss me if you want to miss me. Every Arsenal player came in my direction, if other people didn’t that’s not a problem, that’s not a story, that’s not the end of the world. No more comments."
