Phil Gartside: Bolton’s chairman faces allegations of perjury

Gartside has been summoned before magistrates to face allegations of perjury and fraud in a private prosecution brought by Tony McGill

Phil Gartside, Bolton’s chairman, has been summoned before magistrates to face allegations of perjury and fraud in a private prosecution brought by Tony McGill, an agent.

The case is the latest stage in a long running dispute which began when McGill claimed that he was cut out of the deal when Bolton signed Gavin McCann from Aston Villa for £1million in 2007. McGill claims that SEM, a sports agency, was brought in at the last minute to take the deal from him. McGill originally lost a case, in which he sued for £300,000.

If the latest case goes ahead Gartside will be joined in Newcastle magistrates’ court on 25 February, by McCann, Sammy Lee, Bolton’s manager at the time, who face similar allegations, and Frank McParland, who was Bolton’s director of football and now performs a similar role for Brentford. He is accused of perjury.

Liverpool have sold Suso to Milan, ending the 21-year-old Spanish midfielder’s miserable stay at Anfield since joining from Cadiz in 2011. His only goal in 21 appearances came against Middlesbrough this season.

Samuel Eto’o (left) is also leaving Merseyside, the veteran Cameroonian striker quitting Everton to join Sampdoria to be closer to his family in Milan.

Ricardo Vaz Te has made himself a free agent by quitting West Ham by mutual consent. The high point of the 28-year-old forward’s career at the Hammers was scoring the winner in the Championship play-off final against Blackpool in his first season with the club.

Lee Jeong-hyeop scored the only as South Korea upset Australia 1-0 at the Asian Cup to win Group A and secure what looks an easier path to the final. Defeat left the hosts to face China in the quarter-finals with potentially Japan, the defending champions, to follow.
