Initial reports over Chelsea's bid for Wayne Rooney suggested £10m plus Juan Mata or David Luiz had been offered as part of the deal.

While Chelsea have now confirmed an official offer has been made, they deny that any player swap is involved.

However, if the Blues are serious about bringing Rooney to Stamford Bridge, readers of The Independent overwhelmingly believe offering Mata as part of the deal should lead to Manchester United accepting a bid.

In answer to the question 'Should Manchester United accept Chelsea's offer for Wayne Rooney?', 64 per cent of 692 votes answered 'Yes - take £10m plus Mata'. Only 7 per cent responded 'Yes - take £10m plus Luiz'.

9 per cent believe United should keep Rooney 'at all costs' while 20 per cent said United should 'demand more money'.

The Independent understands Rooney is Chelsea's top target this summer. So while they have not offered Mata, judging by today's poll, if they did, it might be enough to sweeten the deal.
