Bruno Alves is surely the only player ever to go up for two penalties in the first five of a shootout. The Portuguese centre-back walked uneasily up to the spot, only for Nani to run up and really shoot his nerves to pieces by pulling him back and taking his place. Needless to say Nani confidently dispatched his penalty. This provided no comfort to Alves who usually considers himself a set-piece expert. The defender walked up to the spot for Portugal's fourth penalty and for a split second seemed to have upset the odds by smashing the ball towards the top corner. However, the jubilation was as brief as the agony was total at the realisation that he had hit the ball a little too well as he watched the ball cannon off the cross bar.

John Terry
John Terry's penalty miss in the 2008 Champions League final has to be one of the most epic. On such a big occasion the pressure was palpable. It was bucketing it down with rain in Moscow that evening, and slipping on the turf must have been in the back of all the players' minds when it came down to penalties. Unfortunately the slippery surface got the better of Terry and as his feet slid from beneath him the Chelsea captain sent his penalty onto the outside of the post. Ultimately and unfortunately for Terry this mishap cost him and his side the Champions League final.

During last night's Euro 2012 semi-final Portugal were beaten on penalties by their Iberian neigbours Spain.

The Portuguese were understandably desolate after defeat, but for Bruno Alves there was added humiliation after he wandered up to take a spot-kick before it was his turn.

With that in mind, we take a look at some of the worst penalty mishaps.
