Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal may not need to sign anyone in January despite losing midfielder Aaron Ramsey for three weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Gunners were widely expected to add reinforcements next month after falling 13 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea with Wenger consistently hinting at bringing in at least one new player.

Ramsey was substituted as a precaution in Tuesday’s Champions League win at Galatasaray, after which the midfielder insisted he would be fit for tomorrow’s Premier League home game against Newcastle.

But a scan last night revealed Ramsey has sustained an injury and although no official timescale has been confirmed, it is understood the Wales midfielder will be out for a minimum of three weeks.

However, Wenger’s transfer plans instead appear to hinge on the fitness of defender Laurent Koscielny, who will not face Newcastle due to a calf injury.

The Arsenal manager admits Koscielny’s longstanding Achilles problem has not completely healed and the club remain uncertain over how regularly he will be available over the coming weeks.

Wenger suffered a further blow after a scan last night revealed that Aaron Ramsey has a hamstring problem that it is understood will rule him out for a minimum of three weeks.

But it is only Koscielny’s situation that will force Wenger’s hand in the market, as he said: “If everybody is fit and available, we don't need to go on the transfer market. But we have to consider that there could be a question mark with Koscielny's fitness and we have to go out on the transfer market.

“He has a calf strain, that might be linked with the fact he has maybe overprotected his Achilles, I don’t know. [The inflammation] has not gone completely but on one side it has gone, on the other side not completely. If he did not have a calf strain he could play with his Achilles.

“There will be very little activity, because all the big clubs want to keep their players, and it will be as usual quiet in the first three weeks and a bit frenetic in the last three or four days.”
