Alberto Aquilani set to stay and fight for place at Liverpool

Alberto Aquilani will stay at Liverpool and fight for his place in the first team next season, according to his agent.

The midfielder was seen as a great bit of business when the Anfield club signed him in 2009, but poor form and injuries blighted his first season at the club and he was given few chances to bed down and prove himself.

The following season the Italian was quickly shipped out on loan to Juventus and then AC Milan the following season, but was not permanently signed by either.

It had been thought that the 28-year-old would try and negotiate a move away from Anfield this summer but he clearly feels he has a point to prove and that he has a clean slate to start from under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking to calciomercato.com, the player's agent Franco Zavaglia said: "He'll play for Liverpool.

"There is little to say about leaving AC Milan, the season is over and he'll put that behind him.

"Alberto is back in England and is still a Liverpool player. He will play there next season."
