Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger wins manager of the month award as Jamie Vardy picks up player accolade

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has won the manager of the month award for October, having led his side to four straight wins.

Victories over Watford, Everton and Swansea City, as well as a 3-0 demolition of Manchester United at the start of the month, have put Frenchman’s side joint-top of the Premier League.

The award, which is Wenger’s second of the calendar year and the 15th of his managerial career, comes after his side scored 11 goals in the four wins and conceded only once.

Leicester City’s Claudio Ranieri and Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini were also in line for the award.

“It is always good because it just reminds you that - especially after a defeat like we had on Wednesday night [5-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich] - we have not done too badly in the last month," Wenger said after accepting the accolade.

"You worry as well about maintaining the run for coming months. That is what we want to do always.”

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has been named the league’s player of the month for October.

The former Stocksbridge Park Steels forward scored five goals in four games last month, with strikes against Norwich City, Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and a brace midway through the month against Southampton.

Vardy’s form has continued into November and he has now scored in nine consecutive league games, one short of former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record.

His exceptional scoring run has also earned him a call-up to Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Spain and France.

"It's an unbelievable achievement and it just shows how the club is doing as well as me. They are putting me into the positions to score the goals, so I am obviously delighted to get the award," the 28-year-old said.

"When the gaffer came in he said that he wanted everyone to improve, so I had to improve on what I did last year and I have already doubled my tally from last year.

"I don't set myself any targets, I just want to keep on improving as much as possible and the way the season has started I could not ask for much more really. It's been a brilliant start for myself as well as the team."
