Arsenal fans arrested after three supporters attack steward who was removing man ‘for racial abuse’

Two males and a female were arrested during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace

Three Arsenal fans have been arrested after a video emerged showing supporters grappling with stewards during Sunday’s match with Crystal Palace, with one fan asked to leave the stadium after allegedly shouting racial abuse from the stands inside the Emirates Stadium.

The video shows stewards attempting to remove two supporters from the stadium with one person appearing to try and bite a steward on the head. One stewards needed medical attention after the altercation, but it was confirmed by the club that he had not suffered any serious injuries.

The fan arrested for allegedly shouting racial taunts had already been warned over his behaviour, reports the Evening Standard, and the decision was taken to ask him to leave before being physically removed. Two other supporters were arrested after the same altercation.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Three people were arrested yesterday, Sunday, 17 April, at the Emirates Stadium following an incident where a steward was assaulted.

"A 50-year-old was arrested on suspicion of common assault and section 4 of the Public Order Act after stewards attempted to remove him from the stadium for racial abuse.

“A 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were also arrested on suspicion of the same offences after an altercation took place during the attempt to remove the man from the stadium.

"All three remain in custody at a north London police station."

The incident is believed to have occurred during the first half of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Palace, and the club confirmed that they are assisting authorities with their investigation regarding the incident.

An Arsenal spokesman said: "We are working with the Police regarding this incident. The stewards received medical attention after the incident and thankfully were not seriously injured."
