Arsenal news: Arsene Wenger could be offered contract extension to fight off England interest
The Arsenal manager has been reportedly shortlisted by the FA as a replacement to Roy Hodgson
Arsenal could be poised to extend Arsene Wenger’s contract with the club after the Frenchman was linked to the new England job.
The Arsenal manager is widely expected to see out the final year of his contract at the Emirates while FA chief executive Martin Glenn recently revealed he’s prepared to wait up to a year to ensure the right man is appointed to the job.
But according to the Daily Mail, the London club could be prepared to extend Wenger’s contract to halt what would be his shock appointment as England manger.
However, reports suggest that a new deal will be largely dependent on Arsenal’s start to the coming season.
The club hierarchy are believed to be particularly concerned about extending Wenger’s contract if the fans turn on their manager as they did at the start of the 2015/16 season.
Wenger himself would be more than likely to sign a new contract if offered one given his emotional ties to the Gunners.
The Frenchman moved to Arsenal in 1996 and has since gone on to enjoy a prolific career at the north London club.
Alongside three Premier League titles, Wenger has won six FA Cup trophies with Arsenal and cemented himself in club history after their famous ‘Invincibles’ season in 2003/04.
Although Wenger’s managerial future at the Emirates may be in question, Arsenal have recently welcomed back ex-player Tony Adams to the club.
Adams has returned as an academy coach and is expected to be taking sessions with Arsenal’s under 18s side.
It remains to be seen whether he will be offered a full-time role by the club though.
