Brendan Rodgers to face end-of-season review after Liverpool's disappointing campaign

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers faces an end-of-season review with the club's owners following the final fixture of a disappointing campaign.

Fenway Sports Group's meeting with the manager will form part of a wider, routine investigation into why the Reds have failed to reach the heights of last season despite almost £110m of new signings.

The manager's job is not under threat, but Rodgers will be expecting tough questions with his side sitting in fifth place of the Premier League going into Sunday's trip to Stoke.

The Reds failed to progress from the group stages of the Champions League, and were knocked out in the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup by Aston Villa. After picking up just eight of their last available 24 points in the league, they now need a result at the Britannia to guarantee a Europa League spot next season.

Liverpool narrowly missing out on the title last season, finishing just two points behind Manchester City in second place, but have struggled for goals in this campaign after the departure of Luis Suarez and the ongoing injury problems of Daniel Sturridge.

However, Rodgers need to explain why big-money acquisitions such as Mario Balotelli, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have failed to have the desired impact.

He will also face questions on the future of Raheem Sterling, whose agent is set to meet chief executive Ian Ayre on Friday to discuss the 20-year-old's future.

The winger has been consistently linked with a move to another club in after rejecting talks over a contract extension at Anfield. He was booed by Liverpool fans during the club's awards ceremony, despite picking up the Young Player of the Year award.

Speaking at the annual awards night, Rodgers said: "The club will continue to work hard to improve the squad and next year provides another great opportunity for us like last season."
