Burnley vs Hull City reaction: Ashley Barnes and Burnley off the mark and full of new hope

The Clarets picked up their first win of the season

A week earlier Ashley Barnes could not even get on the bench for Burnley’s defeat at Arsenal. Now he is the hero of Turf Moor after scoring the goal that gave the Clarets their first win of the season.

Just over seven years ago, he was playing in the Southern League with Paulton Rovers. A goal against Wigan on Easter Monday was his last before Saturday, when he headed the winner in the 1-0 victory against Hull City.

“I’ve played in nearly every league possible, right from the bottom, so it’s a dream come true to play in the Premier League and to get off the mark – and it’s the first of many, hopefully,” said Barnes, 25.

“To get the first three points on the board is brilliant. If we keep playing like that there’s every chance we can stay in this league.”

Hull played the final stages with 10 men after a back injury to Curtis Davies. Worryingly for manager Steve Bruce, they have won just one league game since mid-August.

“[Burnley] had a greater desire to win the game,” said Bruce, who ordered his players in for extra training yesterday. “We’ll be at the bottom of the table playing like that. It was our worst performance in the Premier League.”
