Premier League weekend round-up

Cardiff City were unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority against Newcastle United, who despite going down to 10 men had a chance to steal all three points at the death.

But Kenedy, who was lucky to still be on the pitch after kicking out at Victor Camarasa in the first half, saw his poor penalty saved by Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The spot-kick came in the final minute of injury-time, and not long after Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden was shown a straight red card for a bad challenge from behind on Josh Murphy - not long after coming on at half-time and having not completed a single pass to his teammates.

Re-live the live action below...

What time does it start?

Cardiff City vs Newcastle United kicks off at 12:30PM (BST)

Where can I watch it?

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports’ Premier League and Main Event channels, as well as their Ultra HD channel. Sky Sports subscribers can also stream the game online via the SkyGo app.

Highlights will be available at 10:30PM on BBC One.

It’s a big game for…

Salomon Rondon: The Venezuelan forward was brought on with 30 minutes remaining against Spurs, but his involvement was restricted to just 11 touches, one of which was an effort that was deflected on to the bar. The West Bromwich Albion loanee will need no introduction to Newcastle’s football striking heritage, and will therefore be eager to open his account and convince Benitez of his ability to lead the line.

Stat…

Five: This will be the sixth meeting between Rafael Benitez and Neil Warnock, and the Spaniard remains undefeated against his English counterpart in their five previous meetings. In fact, the former Liverpool manager has not failed to beat Warnock since his former side’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on the opening day of the 2006/07 season.

Remember when…

Newcastle may already have secured their promotion back to the Premier League in the last meeting between these two sides, but with a glimmer of hope of claiming Championship title still there, the Magpies refused to take their foot off the gas. Benitez’s side ran out comfortable 2-0 winners, and it included this fantastic strike from former Arsenal man Isaac Hayden.

Player to watch…

Callum Paterson: The 23-year-old midfielder typified Cardiff’s spirited performance at the Vitality Stadium, working tirelessly both in terms of regaining and retaining the ball. How his link-up play with Bobby Reid develops will be one to keep an eye on, but the former Hearts man reminded everyone he could be the fulcrum of the newly-promoted side’s midfield.

Past three-meetings…

Cardiff City 0 Newcastle United 2 (Atsu, Hayden), Championship, April 2017

Newcastle United 2 (Atsu, Gouffran) Cardiff City 1 (Whittingham), Championship, November 2016

Newcastle United 3 (Ameobi, Remy, Taylor) Cardiff City 0, Premier League, May 2014

Warnock calls a truce with Benitez

It may not shock you to find out that Neil Warnock has been putting out the fires he started in the past.

On the penultimate weekend of the 2006/07 season, Benitez's played a second string Liverpool side against Sheffield United’s relegation rivals Fulham ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League final, which was 18 days away. Fulham beat the Reds 1-0 and all but secured their Premier League status, making things harder for Sheffield United, who went down on the final day.

“At least I knew the players that were playing. I didn’t even know two of those that played for Liverpool at Fulham last week,” Warnock said at the time. “I’d never heard of them but when you are a foreign manager like Rafa Benitez, you probably don’t give two hoots about what Sheffield United think.”

In 2011 Warnock said he would always hold a grudge against the Spaniard for fielding a weakened team against his relegation rivals. “You don’t ever forget things like that. I’ll always remember that.

“Benitez sent me an email once saying that if I mentioned it again he’d take me to court,” added Warnock.

However, the Cardiff manager appears to have a new outlook on the situation and suggested their feud is over. “Everything’s been said about what happened and we’ve met a few times since. Life’s too short and I’ve got to enjoy this now with a full house."

Season so far

Both sides are searching for their first win of the season after opening weekend defeats.

Newcastle hosted Tottenham at St James' Park and were beaten 2-1. Jan Vertonghen put the visitors ahead inside the first ten minutes, but Joselu equalised three minutes later.  A flurry of first half goals ended with Dele Alli scoring the third and last goal of the game to hand Spurs the win.

A real test of Cardiff's Premier League credentials was against Bournemouth. The Cherries are the kind of side which Cardiff must try and take points from if they are going to have any chance of staying up this season. However, Eddie Howe's side outplayed the newly promoted team and Cardiff were beaten 2-0.

Benitez warns of over-confidence

“You have to be really careful you have don’t have over-confidence from last season and you aren’t carrying that, especially when you are playing these kind of teams, he told the Newcastle Chronicle. "Cardiff will be a tough test for us.”

“If we can do well and get three points this weekend we will have more confidence for the next few games.

“Last season though we lost the first two games and we still finished 10th. It is really important to remember the bigger picture.

“Our team is improving every week and this is an opportunity to do well.”

Shelvey: I have grown up

Jonjo Shelvey is keen to put his ill-tempered past behind him and tells BBC Sport has been working closely with a psychologist. The Newcastle midfielder has been sent off four times and received 28 yellow cards in his career, but he has only been booked once in his last 19 matches.

"I'm the same way my dad was on a football pitch. It stems down to wanting to win so much," he said.

"As soon as I step over that white line it's that desire to be a winner. It took me a long time to learn there are ways to win a football match.

"I spent a bit of time with a psychologist - I still do. I feel that that has helped. He gives you little pointers that if you do feel you're losing your head."

"I'm 26 years of age and it was time to mature and grow up. I feel that I have now," Shelvey told BBC Football Focus.

"Going back two or three years ago, when you get called a bald whatever and get booed every time you touch the ball, you end up smashing someone.

"Now I see it as a compliment when fans boo me because they know I can hurt them on the football pitch, and I try to do it in that way."

Last meetings

Newcastle did the double over Cardiff in their 2016/17 season. The Magpies won 2-1 at St James' Park and beat Cardiff 2-0 to all but secure the Championship title.

3: Early yellow card for Matt Ritchie who collides late with Junior Hoilett. He did get a nudge from a Cardiff played as he slid in, but it's a fair decision. Hoilett is back on his feet after receiving treatment on the touchline.
