Chelsea reportedly want to persuade young goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to extend his loan spell at Atletico Madrid as they look to avoid losing the sought-after Belgian.

Courtois has been highly impressive during his time in Madrid, but with his path to the Chelsea No.1 shirt blocked by the evergreen Petr Cech, rumours about the 21-year-old's Stamford Bridge future have persisted.

However reports in the Spanish media suggest that Jose Mourinho is loathed to losing the youngster and hopes to persuade him to extend his deal at Chelsea, which currently expires in 2016, and to spend more time on loan at Atletico.

It is understood that the extension of the loan spell with Atletico would be conditional on the keeper extending his contract with the Blues.

However it remains to be seen whether Courtois will agree to such an agreement, perhaps deciding to cut his losses with a club that he is yet to make a single appearance for and instead opting to join a side where he is automatic first choice.

With Courtois Belgium's first choice for the upcoming World Cup, speculation in the youngster's future is only going to increase.
