Chelsea say there is 'no truth' in reports Avram Grant will return to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have denied reports linking former caretaker manager Avram Grant with a return to the club.

The rumours have circulated following the latest set-back in Rafael Benitez's disastrous start as Chelsea manager.

Since replacing Roberto Di Matteo, the Spaniard has overseen two goalless home draws and most recently, a 3-1 defeat in the London derby against West Ham.

Coupled with the anger among Chelsea supporters at Benitez's appointment, a position they have made vocal throughout Benitez's three games in charge, there is already speculation as to the former Liverpool manager's future.

Benitez admitted himself he was not "100 per cent" whether his position was secure, although insists he will not be driven out of the club. Asked if he could walk away from Stamford Bridge, Benitez said: "No. When I decided to come, I knew it was a challenge. We have to win games, and everyone will be happier."

Amongst the speculation has been rumours of a return for Grant who managed the club on a caretaker basis following the departure of Jose Mourinho. The Israeli, who is close friends with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, guided the west London club to the Champions League final before he was replaced by Luiz Felipe Scolari in the summer of 2008.

However, a Chelsea spokesman has said "there is no truth in the reports" that Grant would be brought in to advise Benitez.

The result on Saturday means Benitez is the first Chelsea manager not to win one of his first three games in charge. Up next is Nordsjaelland - a game in which even victory cannot guarantee Chelsea's progress to the Champions League knock-out stages.
